Green Infrastructure Policy Development

Austin, Texas's green infrastructure code requires the use of green stormwater infrastructure (GSI) for most new and redeveloped sites that are larger than 8,000 square feet. GSI is the primary method for preventing stormwater pollution and includes:

  • Rain gardens

  • Biofiltration

  • Rainwater harvesting

  • Retention and irrigation systems

  • Porous pavement

  • Vegetative filter strips

  • Non-required vegetation, such as trees

The code also requires that stormwater from parking lots drain into parking lot islands, medians, and peninsulas when possible.
